Is Social Bookmarking The Same As Blogging?

Could someone please explain what social bookmarking is? How is it similar to and different from blogging and a wiki?

  2. Social bookmarking is a way to share interesting links with others. Sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, and Delicious allow you to vote for links; other users can often see which links you voted for.
Blogging is a much broader concept. In basic terms, a weblog (blog) entry is most often a diary or news update, depending on whether it’s a personal or professional site. Sites like Blogger and WordPress allow for the easy creation of blogs.
A wiki is a site where all users can actively edit the content of a webpage.

How are they similar? Well, they all encourage the active participation of internet users and wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for the users.
How are they different? See above.

  3. Social Bookmarking could almost be considered a micro blogging platform.

It is much like any social site, you have a log in, a profile page and can share blog posts from around the Internet you find interesting.

What makes social bookmarking different from other social sites is that other users on the site can vote for the post or at times, vote it down as uninteresting or low quality.

The more votes your submission / sharing gets the more prominently it is displayed on the social bookmarking site.

Examples of high trafficked bookmarking sites would be Digg.com, StumbleUpon.com and Mixx.com.

Digg is a very hard community, StumbleUpon is kind of quirky and for a first attempt at using social bookmarking I suggest you try Mixx.com. A more friendly community….

Of course SB sites have a friends system like any social site and you can build a following there as is the point with any social site.

Most of all realize that social bookmarking is NOT about promoting you own site, it is about sharing quality NEWS worthy posts that bring value to the members experience there.

That is not to say at times you can share your own content but for sites like Digg and Stumble, that is a no no.

Hope this helps you get started with social bookmarking. – Chris Lang
