Submit your web site’s Sitemap to Live.com

This is the last post of the sitemap submission series. We are already through Google and Yahoo and now it’s Live.com (or MSN). The process is pretty much similar. If you have submitted your site’s sitemap to Google or Yahoo or both, you must have created the file sitemap.xml and it’s still there in the root directory of your site.

Before you do anything else just go to Live.com Webmaster Center and log in using your Live Mail or Hotmail Account and hit the ‘Add a site’ button.

When the page loads completely provide information like your web site’s url and the url or location of the site’s sitemap.xml. Please note here that this is not the regular site-map (generally sitemap.html) you used to have on your site but a specially generated xml file. You can have a sitemap.xml for your web site generated for free here – http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

After you submit your site details, you need to verify or authenticate the web site which is pretty much like Google and Yahoo. Create a HTML file by copy and pasting the code provided in the page that loads on submission in Notepad and name the file as suggested. Here is an example -

That’s it. You are done. Just hit the ‘OK’ button and you will get the confirmation that your site has been aded to Live.com Webmaster Center.

Submitting your sitemap and other site details to Google, Yahoo and Live.com is very important as it helps the search engine robots to index your site properly and hence help you achieve higher positions in the search engine result pages.

Check if your web site is really optimized

What’s the newest tool in the SEO and internet marketing space? It’s Stompernet Site Seer from Stompernet. To get this ‘must have’ tool you need to go here and opt in /register first. So, go ahead and do it if you haven’t done it already. I have already tried this tool and it returned (actually emailed) with a real eye-opening report on the SEO status of one of my web sites. Here are some screen shots of the tool and the result.

It’s pretty easy to fill up the fields and submit your site details. And soon the system will send you an email containing the link to the result page. Here’s a few screenshots of the result page.

I must admit that I’m pretty impressed with the tool though it’s not ground breaking but still it’s very handy to have all information about your site in one place. And you will feel good to learn that there’s someone or something to look after the SEO of your site. It also suggests what you should do to promote your site including submitting your site to several resources.

How to submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo and Live.com

For better indexing and thus higher ranking of your web site you should always submit your site map to Google, yahoo and MSN (live.com). It’s not the regular html site map on your website rather it’s an xml file universally named as sitemap.xml. You can create it yourself or even better you can get it generated for free at XML-Sitemaps. After you have created the sitemap download / copy it and save it to your local hard drive and upload it to your web site root ( normally public_html). To check you have uploaded it properly type http://www.yourwebsiteurl.com/sitemap.xml . if it loads properly you are ready to proceed to the next step.

Firstly, open up the following sites in 3 different tabs of your browser (Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 supports tab browsing. however it’s not a criteria and you can do it by opening new windows or just do one by one on the same window).

Step #1 – Add your site

Step #2 – Click Verify your site when the next page loads.

Step #3 – You have to choose the verification method to verify your site. You have two options – you can verify by inserting a META tag or by uploading a blank file.

First, let’s see how the META tag works -

Insert the Meta tag in your site’s Home page source code as it is. Don’t change anything, just copy and paste the code between the head tags. Note the Meta tag just below the Meta keywords tag.

Title of your site goes here

Save, Upload and Verify.

But, I prefer the File Upload method as described below.

Select the “Upload an HTML file” option instead of the earlier “Add a Meta Tag” from the drop down menu.

Create a blank HTML file and name it exactly as suggested by Google. To create a HTML file right click on your desktop or on the white space inside a folder and select New. Then select “Text Document” from the sub menu to create a text document. Rename the text document by replacing New Text Document.txt by the name provided by Google (for example, googleabCDEFgh12345IJKL67890m.html). An alert will pop up asking you whether you really want to rename the file. Hit Yes. And voila, your HTML file is ready to upload to your sever. Upload it to your root directory and first verify if it is really there by clicking the link provided. A blank page is what you are going to see but if you follow the address bar you will notice that url you just clicked a second back. If you have done something wrong the browser will return the “The webpage cannot be found” message.

Once you are satisfied, hit the Verify button.

Congratulations. You have successfully verified your site. Now proceed to upload your sitemap. Hope you have already created one and uploaded it to your server.

Step #4 – Now click the Sitemap menu from the left sidebar. Now click the Add a Sitemap link on the page which just loaded.

Step #5 – Choose your sitemap type as Add General Web Sitemap

Step #6 – You will now be prompted to add your sitemap. Just complete your Sitemap URL by typing sitemap.xml in the blank field. And hit the Add General Web Sitemap button.

Congratulations again. You have just added your sitemap to the Google. You can now expect better indexing of your pages.

You have to make sure that your web site or blog is optimized. You need both on-page and off-page SEO for all your web pages and blog posts. Selection of keywords and using them effectively throughout your web pages – that’s on-page optimization for you in a nutshell. You should utilize your web page meta tags to the fullest extent especially the Title tag and the Description tag. Your main content should also contain your keywords and key-phrases you are targeting. The search engine spider follows a typical pattern when it crawls your web pages. You should design your web site to take full advantage of it.

The title may suggest that the directory submission service was off for a couple of weeks. And that’s not true. Several websites were submitted during this time. Only that I was concentrating a bit more on something else – the Thirty Day Challenge, to be precise.

It seems that the recent make over of submitatonce.com is proving to be very effective. Apart from changing the look and feel, I did a bit of seo as well. The site is now at #5 with Google SERP for the keyword manual directory submission. That’s straight away a gain of 9 positions. Not bad at all. Last couple of weeks I was busy to give submitatonce.com a new fresh look. And guess what! It’s not only the look that has changed. New submission services have been introduced too. And when you visit the revamped site you will readily notice that I have monetized the site a bit.

Submitting press releases to the media about your website is a great way to have links back to your website. You can submit press releases to broadcast any information about your website which is newsworthy to the internet community. Website Submission 2007 and beyond

When I say website submission I mean much more than just Search Engine Submission. And in fact when you decide to submit your website to various resources, you can safely bypass Search Engine submission. Let the search engines find you naturally. that’s the way they like it and it’s wise that you agree to it. Though after several months you may submit your site to different smaller search engines. But make it absolutely sure not to submit to too many search engines in a short period of time. Submitting to 500 search engines within 3 days will only harm your ranking.

The purpose of website submission is twofold. Firstly to gain one way backlinks for your site and secondly to get free traffic for your site. And both can be achieved if done in a correct way. So, what’s the correct way to do it ? Do it manually. No Search engines, Web Directories or Article Directories like automatic submission by software programs. They call it spamming and often take steps to stop this. Better submit it manually or hire a manual submission service to do it for you.

Now what are the resources where you can submit your website blog, articles or press releases? Let’s take a look at all of them but one at a time.

Directory Submission : There are hundreds of web directories where you can submit your web site. Web directories are very good resources and you should always look to use it to your advantage. There are thre kinds of submissions available – free, reciprocal and paid. I suggest that you always go with the free ones in spite of the fact that they may take some time to approve your submission. And make sure that you have selected the most appropriate category while submitting.

Article Submission : You can submit an article to the numerous article directories and ezines available all over the internet. Typical articles have ‘anchor texts’ hyperlinked to your original site and serve as excellent backlinks. Submitting to Social Bookmarking sites : Social bookmarking is the newest area for you to explore. Here you could create one-way back-links to your website. Just bookmark your sites in social bookmarking sites like Digg, Technorati etc. and if others find your site to be interesting enough, they will add your site to their list of bookmarked sites and you will gain a huge number of one-way links for your site with as little effort as it requires. Press Release Submission â€“ This is another powerful yet under utilized resource. It can effortlessly produce hundreds of qualified backlinks for your website. Apart from these resources you can also try commenting on blog posts, posting in reputed forums as well as social networking sites like myspace.com. Put your link where ever you can. Try to be innovative. Have you ever thought of using Yahoo Answers as a resource. Try it out – it may just prove to be a gold mine in the near future. And the same thing goes with Web 2.0 – it may just change the internet we know.

I hope the above mentioned methods will help you to earn all important backlinks for your site and at the same time push you up in the search engine result pages. One thing I’d like to mention here is while submitting you should always try to use your targeted and theme keywords as anchor texts for your backlinks as the major search engines put so much importance on the anchor text links pointing to your website.
