If you are not submitting your website to social bookmarking sites then, I’m sorry to say, you are not following the new trends of search engine optimization. Your web site’s SEO is incomplete without social bookmarking. Did you ever try to figure why links from social sites has become so crucial ? Or why search engines especially Google take link backs from the Social Bookmarking and Social Networking pretty seriously ?

The answer is obvious. But before I come to that I would like to reveal a “secret”. Social bookmarking or submitting to social networking sites works beyond expectations when other members make your submission favorite or post comments on the story or topic you submit. Not that simply submitting to these Web 2.0 sites doesn’t work but it works even better when you get favors from fellow members. Unfortunately it’s hard to get because nobody will actually going to notice your story and eventually it will get lost amongst thousands of sites submitted everyday. The trick is simple – you have to arrange for it. There are groups where members favor each others submission, post comments to each others stories.

Google and the other major search engines always reward a website with good content with higher positions in their search results forone or more keywords. But how do they know if the content is goodor bad ? Yes, they have some complex algorithms which do the work for them but more than that they depend on back links count. The idea is simple if your site is not good enough you aren’t going to get a lot of back links. Directory submission and Article submissions are manually approved by humans and ensure that the site has some sort of credibility (otherwise it wouldn’t have been approved). Social bookmarking or submitting to social networking sites let users of those sites judge your website and they either like them or dislike them. If they like your content they will rate it high or vote it which will make Google believe that your site is of good quality. This is a simple overview of how Google judge your website; rest assure that there are several other criteria. But as long as you have good content and continue to build backlinks there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do well.

It is very important that you always look out for newer ways to acquire back-links for your website. Manual directory submission, article submission and social bookmarking are some of the well known methods that almost everybody follows. That’s the best strategy you can adapt for article submission.

Social Bookmarking is one of the newer link building methods. And if done properly you can expect huge results from social bookmarking. Even simply submitting to the social bookmarking sites could help you a lot. But to gain maximum advantage from social bookmarking you need to learn and do a bit more. Actually there’s no limit to what you can do with social bookmarking. For example, whenever I publish a post to this blog the link to it automatically get posted to at least 15 Web 2.0 sites via Ping.fm, it also gets pinged by Technorati and several other services. And that’s only a small part of the total social bokmarking and Web 2.0 job that you can do to promote your site.

Submitting web sites to different resources like web directories has become almost a compulsory seo job for all web masters along with article submission and now social bookmarking and Web 2.0 submission. A knowledgeable web master will also go for Press Releases and RSS Feed submission. And if you think you are a breed apart, you may also create a software related to your site and submit the same to hundreds of software directories.

And don’t forget the traffic (which is in some cases viral) these kind of submission generate. To be very frank, directory submission is only for seo. By the way, I just remember that there is another great way to get backlinks as well as very targetd traffic. I’m talking about leveraging video sharing sites like YouTube, Google Video etc. You can create cool little videos and submit them to YouTube and other video sharing sites. This is a very effective strategy.

Directory submission has ben an all time favorite among the wemasters and web site owners. No SEO expert can deny it’s effectiveness as a backlink getter and it is still an absolute must as far as search engine optimization is concerned. But while planning a seo for a new site (and also for older sites) you need to get as many backlinks pointing to your site as possible. Actually, it’s in your hand . . . I mean you don’t have to send emails and request for backlinks from their sites (and get turned down in most cases). All you need to do is invest some time andget all the submission done one by one. Is it going to take time to do all those submissions ? Yes, it will. But you have an alternative. You can outsource all your submission job from somebody else. Is it worthy? Yet another Social Bookbarking Toolbar ?

Submitatonce Site Love Toolbar. I don’t know why, but I found both Social Marker and Social Poster a bit . . . . . well, the idea was great but it wasn’t for me. Onlywire is a great time saver but I don’t know why it often fails with some of the services mentioned in their list. There is a workaround like you need to be always logged in to all the services during the bookmarking process which kills the push button type usability it is known for.

So what I did at that time was developed my own system which involves a tabbed browser like Firefox and RoboForm (not just the best password manager around but more than that …) .

Lately Shareaholic, which is a Firefox (and Flock) add on, is in the news and it really is very user friendly. No wonder it is enjoying a huge fan following. I also like Shareaholoic and actually have it installed in both Firefox andFlock. But then again, I found that there are a few services that are not included in this excellent extension. Faves, Propeller, Soup etc. to name a few of them.

I was discussing about it with one of my friends who gave me a simple yet effective solution – “Why don’t you amke your own extension or a may be a toolbar”. “But I know nothing about it”, I said. “Then find out how to do it”, replied my friend. And soon enough I learned how to make a toolbar and decided to create one to make my tagging exercises fast and easy. And here it is – the Submitatonce Site Love Toolbar. I primarily made it for myself but some of my friends tested it (I asked some of my friends to test it) and they appreciated my work. Encouraged by the appreciation I decided to go ahead and put it up here for you to download and install. I don’t know if you are going to like it, but I love my stuff .

Add your Site and Submit Sitemap to Yahoo and MSN

Last week I showed you how to submit your site map to Google. This week I am going to show you how you can submit the same sitemap.xml to Yahoo and MSN or Live.com as it is now called. In both the cases what you are going to do is actually add your site to Yahoo and Live.com and submit your site map to them. This is done to keep the search engines informed about your site updates. Please note that this isn’t what is commonly referred to as search engine submission. It’s important for SEO that you add your site and submit your site map even if you are already indexed by Yahoo and MSN ( and Google ). Let’s start with Yahoo. But here is a prerequisite for both Yahoo and Live.com – you need to have accounts with both of them. If you don’t have a Yahoo Mail and Hotmail or Live.com Mail ID you can get those for free almost instantly.Step 1: Open your browser and navigate to the Yahoo Explorer site. Here’s the URL – http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Step 2: Notice the My Sites box on the right. Enter your web site’s URL and hit the Add My Site button.

Step 3: You will be prompted to login to Yahoo.

Step 4: You will be taken to a page which is kinda dashboard where you will find all the sites you have submit or will submit. Check the site you wanted to add and hit Manage.

Step 5: Hope you have already created and uploaded your sitemap.xml . Simply type sitemap.xml in the field provided and keep the sitemap type as Web Site Feed (from the drop down box). And click the Add Your Feed button.

Remember we are yet to authenticate our website, which will be the next step.

Step 6: Hit the green Authenticate button on the right when then page loads.

Step 7: The Verification page that comes up is very comprehensive and need no explanation. Just follow the steps and you will authenticate your site without any trouble. Download the verification file (you can also create it), upload to your server and hit the Ready to Authenticate button and you are done. You can also choose the Meta Tag method which is very similar to Google.

Step 8: Your site is pending authentication.

Do not remove the verification file from your server or delete the Meta Tag (should you opted for the Meta Tag method) and check back a couple of days later. Your site would be authenticated and will be indexed and get exposer in a far better way.

How to submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo and Live.com

For better indexing and thus higher ranking of your web site you should always submit your site map to Google, yahoo and MSN (live.com). It’s not the regular html site map on your website rather it’s an xml file universally named as sitemap.xml. You can create it yourself or even better you can get it generated for free at XML-Sitemaps. After you have created the sitemap download / copy it and save it to your local hard drive and upload it to your web site root ( normally public_html). To check you have uploaded it properly type http://www.yourwebsiteurl.com/sitemap.xml . if it loads properly you are ready to proceed to the next step.

Firstly, open up the following sites in 3 different tabs of your browser (Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 supports tab browsing. however it’s not a criteria and you can do it by opening new windows or just do one by one on the same window).

Google Webmaster Tools

Step #1 – Add your site

Step #2 – Click Verify your site when the next page loads.

Step #3 – You have to choose the verification method to verify your site. You have two options – you can verify by inserting a META tag or by uploading a blank file.

First, let’s see how the META tag works -

Insert the Meta tag in your site’s Home page source code as it is. Don’t change anything, just copy and paste the code between the head tags. Note the Meta tag just below the Meta keywords tag.

Title of your site goes here

Save, Upload and Verify.

But, I prefer the File Upload method as described below.

Select the “Upload an HTML file” option instead of the earlier “Add a Meta Tag” from the drop down menu.

Create a blank HTML file and name it exactly as suggested by Google. To create a HTML file right click on your desktop or on the white space inside a folder and select New. Then select “Text Document” from the sub menu to create a text document. Rename the text document by replacing New Text Document.txt by the name provided by Google (for example, googleabCDEFgh12345IJKL67890m.html). An alert will pop up asking you whether you really want to rename the file. Hit Yes. And voila, your HTML file is ready to upload to your sever. Upload it to your root directory and first verify if it is really there by clicking the link provided. A blank page is what you are going to see but if you follow the address bar you will notice that url you just clicked a second back. If you have done something wrong the browser will return the “The webpage cannot be found” message.

Once you are satisfied, hit the Verify button.

Congratulations. You have successfully verified your site. Now proceed to upload your sitemap. Hope you have already created one and uploaded it to your server.

Step #4 – Now click the Sitemap menu from the left sidebar. Now click the Add a Sitemap link on the page which just loaded.

Step #5 – Choose your sitemap type as Add General Web Sitemap

Step #6 – You will now be prompted to add your sitemap. Just complete your Sitemap URL by typing sitemap.xml in the blank field. And hit the Add General Web Sitemap button.

Congratulations again. You have just added your sitemap to the Google. You can now expect better indexing of your pages.

You should utilize your web page meta tags to the fullest extent especially the Title tag and the Description tag. So, how are things going to be in the year 2008 for you ? Well, the answer is simple – the way you want it to be. Stay informed, get organized, do what you need to do and you will be on top.

Those of you who are yet to start their internet marketing endeavor, it’s time you actually get active. reading loads of ebooks won’t make you money, a little effort from your part will. Lastly, web promotion. Will there be a change ? The core will remain the same. The title may suggest that the directory submission service was off for a couple of weeks. And that’s not true. Several websites were submitted during this time. Only that I was concentrating a bit more on something else – the Thirty Day Challenge, to be precise.
