Is your Press Release Media Friendly ?
A press release has a definite writing style. Before you actually write one, I strongly suggest that you go through a few newspaper articles to get a feel of the journalistic style. Note how the newspapers serve news all over the world each day. All you have to do is simply follow that style when you prepare a press release for your company. It’s not that hard.
May I again briefly remind you the definition of Press Release? Press release may be defined as an article that is written to announce any newsworthy event or happening of the company that is written in style followed by journalists and reporters.
So, as you are ready to submit your press release, I suggest that you go through the following passage which is a sort of ‘Press Release Check list’.
First, ask yourself a few simple questions
1. Is your press release newsworthy at all?
2. What is the prime objective of the press release?
3. Are you sure that the headline of your news story will be able to attract attention?
Tips: Write your press releases concisely, make every word count, check for misspelled words and don’t get off point: Ideally, limit your press release to no more than 500 words.
4. Is the content of the main body of your news item informative as well as comprehensive?
Tips: Put yourself in the shoes of the media who are extremely busy and hate reading press releases. Give them a reason to read it (great headline, useful advice, interesting story idea)
5. Online pres releases have a specific format – is yours in line with that?
